Construction date of building depicted and major alterations | At the time of Hassell’s painting this house was occupied by Christian Frederick Charles Alexander James Johnston of the 6th Inniskilling Dragoons. In 1817 Johnston married Elizabeth Jane Henrietta Tollemache the eldest daughter of Admiral Tollemach who lived in another house illustrated by Hassell (PR155). The Journals of the House of Lords record their divorce in 1826 after Elizabeth’s affair with the Earl of Cardigan with whom she then entered into another unhappy marriage. Ritchie, M., & Ritchie, C.
