History of ownership/residents and useThe Catherine Wheel was first recorded in a parliamentary survey of 1668 as one of the principal inns in Egham. However the building pictured by Hassell is early eighteenth century and would have replaced a previous structure.

Egham was on a busy coaching route to and from London. In 1828 the Catherine Wheel would have seen around 19 horse drawn coaches a day. Hassell’s picture records the large entrance and space at the back of the inn for carts and coaches. It is even possible he was staying at the inn himself.

In 1820 the publican was Mr Cooper.

In 1834 George Fagg of Bedfont Middlesex was renting the leasehold
