Clay Pipe Making

  • 1) Ball of clay ready for use
  • 2) Clay rolled to form a ‘doll’ (rough shape of a pipe).
  • 3) Doll ready to be placed in a mould.
  • 4) Oiling the mould to prevent clay sticking to the mould.
  • 5) Placing doll into the mould.
  • 6) Cramping up the mould.
  • 7) Mould placed into the ‘Gin Press’ ready to form the pipe bowl.
  • 8) Oil plunger.
  • 9) Gin Press in use, forming the pipe bowl.
  • 10) Trimming off excess clay.
  • 11) Release mould.
  • 12) Threading the wire into the pipe stem to form the hole through the pipe stem.
  • 14) Dummy pipe ready for placing in the kiln.
  • 15) Air dried pipe removed from mould.
  • 16) Trimming of air dried pipe.
  • 17) Trimming of air dried pipe
  • 18) Placing Pipe in the Kiln
  • 19) Removing fired clay pipe from the kiln.
  • 20) Completed Pipe
