History of ownership/residents and useAt the time of Hassell’s painting this house was occupied by Rear Admiral John Richard Delap Tollemache. Tollemache (formerly Halliday until he assumed the name and arms of his mother’s family in 1821) had a distinguished naval career advancing to Vice Admiral in 1830. In 1797 he married Elizabeth Stratford, daughter of John Stratford, 3rd Earl of Aldborough, and they had 14 children. He died in 1837. 

Tollemache’s eldest daughter Elizabeth married Captain Johnston of the Inniskillin Dragoons who lived close by in another house illustrated by Hassell, see PR152.
